What is JSON Escaping and Unescaping?

In JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), string values are bounded by double quotation marks ("). When a string contains special characters—such as literal double quotes, backslashes, newlines, or control characters—these characters would break JSON syntax if written directly.

JSON Escaping

Escaping prepends a backslash (\) before special characters and replaces whitespace control characters with safe two-character tokens (e.g. \n for newline, \t for tab, \" for quotes). This enables strings to be safely embedded in JSON payloads, REST API requests, and code literals.

JSON Unescaping

Unescaping is the exact reverse process. It parses backslash sequences (like \", \\, \n, and \uXXXX) and translates them back into their original literal characters, restoring human readability and original data formatting.

How to Escape and Unescape JSON Online

1

Input Your Content

Paste your text, string literal, or JSON document into the left editor, drag & drop a file, or click Load Example.

2

Choose Action

Click Escape JSON to convert special characters or Unescape JSON to reverse escape sequences.

3

Configure Options

Optionally toggle Wrap in Quotes, Escape Slashes, or Escape Unicode (\uXXXX) from the Options bar.

4

Copy or Download

Copy the result to your clipboard with one click or download it directly as escaped.json or unescaped.json.

Standard JSON Escape Sequences Reference

Accurately handles all official JSON escape sequences: \", \\, \/, \b, \f, \n, \r, \t, and \uXXXX.

Reversible Round-Trip Accuracy

Escape then Unescape (or vice versa) without losing original data precision, whitespace characters, or Unicode symbols.

Unicode & Surrogate Pairs

Full support for international characters, Indian scripts, Asian characters, accented letters, and high-surrogate emojis (e.g. \uD83D\uDE00→ 😀).

100% Client-Side Privacy

All string processing runs in your browser using local JavaScript memory. No API keys, credentials, or private payloads are uploaded to any server.

Instant Swap & Reverse

One-click Swap button moves your output back to input and automatically toggles between Escape and Unescape modes.

Drop .json or text files directly onto the editor. Download escaped or unescaped results with a single click.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is JSON escaping?

JSON escaping is the conversion of special characters (such as double quotes, backslashes, tabs, and newlines) into standardized backslash escape sequences (such as \", \\, \t, and \n). This ensures the text can be safely represented inside JSON string literals or embedded inside programming code without causing syntax errors.

What is JSON unescaping?

JSON unescaping is the inverse operation that takes an escaped string (containing sequences like \", \\, \n, \t, and \uXXXX) and restores the original literal characters, making the text or JSON structure human-readable and usable in its raw form.

How do I escape a JSON string online?

1. Paste your raw text, code snippet, or JSON into the input box. 2. (Optional) Toggle options like 'Wrap in Quotes' or 'Escape Unicode'. 3. Click 'Escape JSON' (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Enter). 4. Copy the escaped result or download it as escaped.json.

How do I unescape an escaped JSON string?

1. Paste the escaped string (e.g. {\"name\":\"John\"}) into the input box. 2. Click 'Unescape JSON' (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Enter). 3. Review the unescaped result and click 'Copy' or 'Download'.

What characters require escaping in standard JSON?

According to ECMA-404 / RFC 8259 JSON standards, the following characters must be escaped within string values: • Double quotation mark (") -> \" • Reverse solidus / backslash (\) -> \\ • Control characters (U+0000 to U+001F), including: - Newline (LF) -> \n - Carriage return (CR) -> \r - Horizontal tab -> \t - Backspace -> \b - Form feed -> \f - Other control characters -> \u00XX

Can I escape plain text without creating a JSON object?

Yes! The tool works seamlessly with plain text strings, file system paths (e.g. C:\Users\Name), regex patterns, and multi-line SQL queries without requiring you to wrap your text in JSON brackets.

Does this tool support Unicode escape sequences like \uXXXX?

Yes! When unescaping, Unicode sequences (such as \u00A9 for ©, \u20B9 for ₹, or surrogate pairs like \uD83D\uDE00 for 😀) are decoded into their native UTF-8 representations. When escaping, you can also choose whether to preserve UTF-8 or escape characters into \uXXXX hex sequences.

Does this JSON Escape tool upload my data to any server?

No. All conversions, character replacements, and file operations happen 100% client-side in your web browser. No input text, confidential API payloads, or credentials ever leave your device.

Is this JSON Escape / Unescape tool free?

Yes, this tool is 100% free with no account creation, no usage quotas, and no subscription fees.
